On January 29th, Brian Truitt revealed on USAToday.com that Hasbro was going to release 6-inch Star Wars action figures in Fall 2013. This confirmed months of speculations on a new direction for Hasbro's Star Wars action figure toy line. The article revealed a first publicity image of Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot), and confirmed the entire first wave of 6-inch scaled action figures, including Darth Maul, R2-D2 and a Sandtrooper (Squad Leader). Speaking about the name, "The Black Series," and the black packaging, Derryl DePriest (Vice President, Global Brand Management at Hasbro, Inc.) stated: "It's one of the main colors of Star Wars all the way back to the beginning, and it's the approach that Lucasfilm has taken with their collector-oriented product line. We're bringing that simplicity and essence and focus on the character now to the toy aisle."
The Black Series 6-inch toy line debuted officially on August 1, 2013, along with the basic The Black Series 3 3/4-inch figures. Despite the higher price point of approx. $19.99 - almost twice as much as a regular basic Star Wars action figure at the time, the all-new scale was received well by fans.
