BL-17 Review

This BL-17 figure was released in 2009 together with a Boba Fett figure as a Walmart exclusive. The figure is based on the character which was introduced in the 1985 animated Star Wars Droids TV series as a Battle Legionnaire Battle Droid. Instead of making this figure in an animated style as seen in the cartoon, Hasbro opted to keep it in sync with the basic figure line-up and used a regular, realistic style Protocol Droid mold.

The figure has a total of 13 joints, only missing a joint in the waist area. BL-17 stands very securely on it's own and has no balancing issues. There were no weapons included with this figure, but BL-17's hands are molded in a way so that he can hold any basic blaster or blaster rifle. The most interesting question really is, how close is this figure to the actual source material? In some shots from the Droids cartoon, the figure appears to have a greenish base color. However, some still images show BL-17 with a blue color. Hasbro went with green. The overall patterns on the chest seem to match the TV counterpart, but the neck area looks completely different. The head sculpt looks also very different when compared to the TV show, but that's just how Protocol Droids (or in this case, a Protocol Droid with Battle Droid programming) looked liked in the series.

All in all, it's just an OK figure which makes a cool background droid in a display, and might also appeal to fans of the original Star Wars Droids TV show.
